The X Factor

Everyone knows that when it comes to losing weight or maintaining a healthy lifestlye, there are two key factors to success: diet and exercise. But is that all there is to it? Sure those two things alone will get you results, but I believe there is a third factor, an "X factor," that determines the level of success you will achieve. It isn't as easily measured as the number of calories consumed, or the number of reps completed, but you know it when it's there. It's passion--and you either feel it--or you don't.

Passion turns “have to” into “want to.” It is an intangible quality that drives people to push past comfort zones, because to give less than 110% would be unthinkable. Passion is a feeling that comes from deep within---and it’s not something that can be taught. Sure, you can learn HOW to do something—but passion goes beyond technique. For example, you can teach someone the mechanics of a grammatically correct sentence, but you can’t teach him how to write a heartfelt story. You can teach someone the steps to a dance, but you can’t make him feel the music. You can teach someone proper running form, but you can’t make him understand that "runner's high." That’s where passion comes into play--that deep-seated desire to try a little harder, go a little further, and see "what would happen if?" Passion separates “just one more” from “just enough to get by,” and it’s often the difference between success and status quo.

I recently heard someone say, “just because things could be worse doesn’t mean they couldn’t be better.” Passionate people are always “chasing better.” It isn’t that they aren’t content—it’s that they aren’t complacent. There's a difference!

If you are regularly exercising, but not seeing the results you want, ask yourself, “Am I just going through the motions? Am I phoning it in?" If the answer is yes, it might be time to dig a little deeper, because although I don’t think passion can be taught, I do think it can be found inside each and every one of us if we look hard enough. You have to find the thing that drives you, challenges you, excites or inspires you. The thing you can't imagine NOT doing. THAT is your passion.

Can you get results by just showing up and doing the work? Of course---but where’s the fun in that? You’ll get better results when you find the activity that you can put your heart into--the one that makes it beat faster. I believe that when you find your passion and follow it the rest will fall into place, and you will be surprised at what you are able to achieve both in the gym--- and in life.
