Sweets Without the Cheat

So by now y’all know my weakness is sweets—I rarely turn down a cookie or brownie because life is short, chocolate is good, and I believe in moderation. Normally, it really isn’t an issue due to my activity level. But since being sidelined for about six months, I’ve not been able to indulge as freely as I’d like—which I realized the hard way after my favorite skinny jeans “shrunk” a little.

Started by a personal trainer who is also a self described “health nut,” Barbell Sweets is a small “mom –n- pop” style bakery that specializes in homemade sweets that are not only better for you---they taste amazing! There’s none of that dry, flavorless, chalky taste that gives “good for you foods” a bad name. These treats have been thoughtfully made with only quality ingredients and a big focus on flavor without the use of refined processed sugar, flour or butter. In fact each treat averages only 2-3 grams of natural sugar per serving. To make it even better—all the macros are broken down for you—no guesswork—so it’s easy to figure out where (and when) they fit within your meal plan.

I bought a little of everything (tip: don’t go post-cycle and hangry—oops!) and brought it home to rave reviews from my always “starving” teenage son and his dad. Our top picks were the mini cinnamon rolls, the “raw” cookie dough bites, the lemon poppy cupcakes, and (my personal favorite) the protein peanut butter cups, which taste enough like a Resee’s to curb my candy cravings.

The only negative for me is that there is not one in my hood! Barbell Sweets is located in Helotes—and if you know me, you know I get irritated when I have to go too far outside the loop---lol!
