Listen Up Swimmers!
If you follow me on social media (or read this blog often) you know that I’ve decided to take on another triathlon and I’ve been hitting the pool on a regular basis. What you probably also know is that I HATE TO SWIM. I can run and bike for hours but put me in the pool and I’m over it in 30 minutes. I find it difficult to get my breathing under control, I hate what it does to my hair and skin, and (most importantly) I find it boring as hell. But, since you can’t have a triathlon without it, I’ve decided to find ways to make it suck a little less. I’m working with a coach on my form and breath work, I’ve invested in a boatload of leave-in conditioner and super hydrating skin care, and I’ve decided that music would make the monotony more bearable, so I’ve been experimenting with different underwater headphones.
The first pair was a disaster—not only would they not stay in my ears, the sound was muffled, and one wrong move switched them off mid-swim and I had to stop and readjust. Not a very productive use of swim time. Then I discovered the Finis Duo Underwater MP 3 Player and OMG! These bad boys are like having my own private underwater concert!
Super easy to use, they hold approximately 1000 songs or 60 hours of music! Just connect them to your computer and drag and drop. Easy peasy! But what’s really cool about these is that they don’t go in your ears—they actually sit on your cheekbones for bone conducted audio transmission. The only downside to them is that I think they are a little tricky to slide onto your goggle strap, and I’m not 100% sure that everyone else underwater isn’t hearing my tunes too (sorry not sorry). But what I do know is that my lap time has improved thanks to Lizzo, Madonna, Britney, Taylor and all my favorite girls—and I’m finding the whole experience much more enjoyable in general!
