"Chill" Out For a Good Night's Sleep
I've been married to the same man for almost 24 years and two kids, three moves, a couple of career changes, and a global pandemic later and we're still going strong. Like all couples, however, we have our ups and downs and the one thing that we, ummm, "discuss" ALL THE TIME is the temperature in our bedroom. Thanks to early menopause coupled with the fact that my husband claims to not be able to sleep with a fan on, I toss and turn all night, often waking up drenched in sweat, irritable and exhausted. It's been such a nightmare in fact that I was all set to move into one of our empty bedrooms and crank that fan up as high as it would go, but thanks to the best Christmas gift EVER, I decided to just chill instead.
Yep, Santa (via my parents) brought me the OOLER Sleep System with Chili Cool Mesh™ from Chili Technology and I now average about 8-10 hours of blissful, uninterrupted sleep at night--which has had a HUGE impact on the rest of my life. But more than just the quantity of sleep I'm getting, my QUALITY of sleep has vastly improved. In fact, my Garmin tracker indicates that I spend much more time now in deep and REM sleep stages than I ever have. I am calmer, perform better athletically, don't hit a midday slump, don't have as many sugar or caffeine cravings, and feel less "foggy" overall. The best part? It only goes on my side of the bed! My husband can still sleep in the seventh circle of hell while I enjoy perfectly cool sheets and a cool weighted blanket that keep me snug as a bug in an igloo.
So how does it work? You simply add water to the control unit that sits discreetly under your bed and attaches via cord to the cooling mattress topper that rests under your fitted sheet. Using the mobile app, you set the temperature where you want it. What makes it really cool is that you can customize a sleep schedule for each day of the week and set temperature fluctuations throughout the night. A typical night for me looks like this:
I go to bed around 9:30 so I program the unit to turn on at 9:00 and heat to about 68 degrees so that it's warm when I climb in.
After 10 minutes, I set to drop by 5 degrees. That shift in temperature cues your body that it is time to fall asleep.
Because I tend to wake up hot between 2-3 a.m., I have it drop 2 more degrees in the night. Finally, I set it to gradually warm-up 30 minutes before my alarm goes off in order to help my body wake more naturally.
It's easier than counting sheep y'all! The weighted blanket is optional and can be attached to the system or used on its own. Personally, I just use it over my top sheet without attaching it and it's perfect.
Check it out here and if you have any questions shoot me a message--I could literally talk about this thing all day long. The website also has some good blogs that contain a lot of useful information and tips on how to use the system for enhanced athletic performance and recovery. Take it from me, this is the stuff sweet dreams are made of!
